Motorcycle racing was made popular in Britain in 1949 for more than 20 years before it debuted onto the MotoGP Grand Prix calendar in 1977. That year marked the first year that the race was held on the British mainland - specifically at the Silverstone Circuit. It then took a break for 23 years and moved to another venue, but the race returned to the Silverstone Circuit in 2010. Known as the “home of British motorsport”, the circuit was built on an aerodrome and some of the names of the different parts of the track make reference to the circuit´s past. “Wellington straight”, for instance, was named after the Wellington bombers which had their base at the circuit in WWII.
This is one circuit that has a lot of history behind it and that is one of the reasons that international motor racing was brought back to Silverstone. The modified circuit now measures a total of 5.9km in length and it has 17 turns for riders to take on. There are plenty of speedy straights in this circuit but they are exceptionally challenging, as they are interrupted by some of the most difficult corners of the Motorsports world. These corners include Becketts and Copse and riders will have to manoeuvre these turns with great skill and fearlessness.
