The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari debuted in 1953 as a semi-permanent venue, and is one of the few major international circuits that goes in an anti-clockwise direction. It was named after Enzo Ferrari, the late founder of Ferrari, and his son, Alfredo Ferrari. This circuit has always been seen as the home circuit of Scuderia Ferrari, especially with its headquarters in a nearby town called Maranello, and hordes of fans come out to support the local team. In its early days, the circuit was mainly straights with a few small turns but 1972 saw the revamp of the circuit to add in chicanes. In spite of the additions of chicanes, the circuit was subject to constant safety concerns, especially at the Tamburello corner which left little room between the track and the concrete wall.

Joining the Formula 1 World Championship calendar in 1980, this race was such a success that it became a regular fixture, together with Monza. Taking on the title San Marino Grand Prix, the two circuits worked together to host adrenaline-charged races annually until 2006, when the Imola circuit took a break. Drivers have described the circuit as extremely fast with an old-school feel that provides a thrill ride right from the start, with a fast entrance that comes with a rush of adrenaline.
